Keeping Your Newborn Cool and Safe During the Summer

Summer with a newborn can be beautiful. Getting outside in the sunshine, fresh air, and for family walks, but it can also bring a lot of questions (and sweat!). Babies can’t regulate their temperature the way adults can, so it’s important to keep a close eye on how warm they’re getting.

Here are some simple, safe ways to help keep your little one cool, comfortable, and protected during those hot summer days 💧🧢

1. Dress Baby for the Weather 🌡️👕

Less is more in the heat. If you’re inside with AC, a lightweight onesie might be enough. Outside, breathable cotton clothing is best. Avoid layers .

🍼 Tip: If you're hot, baby probably is too! Feel the back of their neck or chest, if it’s sweaty or hot to the touch, it’s time to cool down.

2. Keep Their Environment Cool ❄️

Whether you’re at home, in the car, or out for a walk, try to keep your baby’s space shady and breezy.

  • Use blackout curtains or fans indoors

  • Avoid peak heat hours (10am–4pm) for walks

  • Never cover the stroller with a blanket, it traps heat! Use a breathable stroller fan or sunshade instead

🚗 In the car: Blast the AC before putting baby in the seat, and always check buckles to make sure they’re not too hot on baby’s skin.

3. Offer More Feeds 💦

Babies, especially breastfed ones, may want to feed more often in the heat to stay hydrated. It’s completely normal! Don’t worry if your baby seems to want to nurse or bottle feed more frequently on warm days.

👶 Watch for signs of dehydration like fewer wet diapers, dry lips, or extra sleepiness and always check with your pediatrician if you’re unsure.

4. Skip the Socks and Hats (Most of the Time) 🧦🚫

Unless you’re in a chilly building or baby runs cool, there’s no need for socks or hats in the summer. Babies release heat through their heads and feet, so leaving them uncovered can help regulate body temperature naturally.

5. Cool Comfort Tricks 🛁🧊

Some little ways to cool baby down:

  • A lukewarm bath (never cold)

  • A damp washcloth on the forehead or belly

  • Light baby massage in a cool room

Just remember, no ice packs or cold water, babies cool off best with gentle, gradual temperature changes.

6. Watch for Signs of Overheating 🚨

Babies can overheat more quickly than we expect. Keep an eye out for:

  • Flushed cheeks

  • Fussiness or irritability

  • Rapid breathing

  • Heat rash
If you notice these signs, move baby to a cooler spot and undress them. Use a fan or cool cloths, and call your pediatrician if you're concerned.

Final Thoughts 🌼

Summer can be such a sweet time to soak up those newborn snuggles, take evening walks, and enjoy slow moments as a family. With just a few simple adjustments, you can keep your baby cool, comfortable, and safe all season long.
